As we are all more than aware, 2020 will go down in history as a time when the world stopped. Cities shut down, schools closed and a whole generation of kids were forced to learn online. Never has a list of the top free educational sites for kids been so needed.
As a parent, it can be so difficult to get the right balance of education, downtime, screen time and play time. However, with the emergence of an increasing amount of online free educational sites for kids, it has become much easier to ensure that when our children are online, they’re actually learning at the same time.
I’ve compiled a list of the top free educational sites for kids focusing on a range of subjects, skills and interests. Take your time, go through the list and share the websites with your kids. They can use these sites to practice their math, focus on their spelling, learn how the world works or take a walk on the wild side and learn about the natural world.
CRAYOLA
For budding young artists, the Crayola website is full of art and craft ideas for kids of all ages. The how-to videos are an excellent way for older kids to practice independently. There are also coloring pages to print out, creative ideas for parents to download, lesson plan advice and how-to guides for kids to learn by themselves.
TYPING CLUB
Designed for children aged 7 and up, Typing Club is a free resource to improve your child’s touch typing skills through games and challenges. Touch typing is an important skill for our kids to learn and this sites teaches through play.
SCHOLASTIC
Scholastic is the largest publisher of children’s books in the world and connects educational facilities and families through their products, resources and expertise. While some of their site is only accessible to paying members, there is a section dedicated to free activities and printables for kids from pre-K all the way up to high school.
PBS KIDS
Every educational program available on PBS Kids can be found on this website. Your child will love to sing along to the songs, practice their counting, sorting and general computer skills with fun games and watch bonus videos. This site is geared towards younger children.
TIME FOR KIDS
From the publishers of TIME magazine, Time for Kids boasts a wealth of must-read articles, videos and photos. With a host of new articles posted weekly, Time for Kids is an excellent source of information for every child interested in current affairs and the world around them. It’s not as interactive as other sites around, but the news articles are tackled in a child-friendly way and make for a fascinating learning experience. Articles are available for Kindergarten students right up to grade 6.
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC KIDS
If your kids love animals and nature, the National Geographic Kids site is a must visit. Brimming with animal facts, photos of nature and information about the world in general, kids will be kept entertained for hours. There are also videos, fun facts and science experiments. The ‘Little Kids’ section is perfect for the younger explorers, while the family section has a wealth of home learning resources, DIY activities and sustainability information.
ABC YA
ABC Ya provides educational games and activities for children in pre-K up to grade 6. The games on are organized into grade levels and you can also search by subject. This site will keep your child entertained for hours – while you can be safe in the knowledge that they are not only learning, but are also safe online.
SCRATCH
Scratch is a unique block-based visual programming website to help primary children learn coding. Users create online projects using a block-like interface. Creations can be shared among an online community or kept private. The website enables kids to think creatively.
BBC BITESIZE
Based on the British curriculum, BBC Bitesize helps students aged six to 16 years with coursework, homework and exam preparation. There is a wealth of interactive content, video and audio summaries as well as mock exams. There are also games for the younger ones as well as advice and information for parents.
COOL MATH GAMES
Cool Math Games is designed for kids aged 12 and under. It is a source of fun math games incorporating a number of different skills. The parent site, Cool Math is an information and teaching portal where kids can top up on lessons.
